My wife Rachelle wanted to see the movie\u00a0Shame\u00a0<\/em>on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis looks good, we should see it,\u201d she said on Saturday night as we watched a trailer for the movie on her laptop.<\/p>\n

In this promo Fassbender sits on a subway with a crisp scarf knotted perfectly around his neck. He simmers, casting his penetrating sex eyes upon a pretty, married woman who beneath his steady, tactile gaze, is flattered, nervous, vulnerable and curious. It\u2019s a piece of hypnosis, really, and it had entirely mesmerized my wife.<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nTrying to break the spell, I said, \u201d Fassbender looks good in a scarf, eh? You ever have somebody look at you like that on the subway?\u201d<\/p>\nRachelle did not respond, but replayed the trailer, watching it with as much concentration and intensity as I have ever seen in her. It was almost like she was solving a math problem, except that there was what looked like a little bit of spittle forming on the bottom left corner of her lip.<\/p>\nMe: \u201cDid you hear what I said?\u201d<\/p>\nNothing.<\/p>\nMe: \u201cYou know, a woman tried to pick me up on the subway two years ago. I was wearing my cool shoes, you know the ones? The Steve Madden ones? She had a rather pronounced facial tic, though, and a bit of a stutter, so maybe it wasn\u2019t a huge compliment..\u201d<\/p>\nStill silence.<\/p>\nI gave Rachelle a push to the shoulder.<\/p>\n\u201cTomorrow,\u201d she said, \u201ctomorrow we go see this movie.\u201d<\/p>\nI reminded her that we\u2019d seen the director\u2019s ( Steve McQueen III) first movie\u00a0Hunger<\/em>, and that she didn\u2019t like it.<\/p>\n\u201cRemember, it was about emaciated guys smearing fecal matter on the wall of a prison cell? Fassbender was one of those guys, you know? You thought he was gross.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cIt just shows what a brilliant actor he is.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cWell, just keep in mind that you were disgusted and bored by what a brilliant actor he was. Why can\u2019t we go see\u00a0The Descendents<\/em>\u00a0instead? George Clooney! He\u2019s winning!\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cYou mean old,\u201d Rachelle said coldly, looking at my grey hair.<\/p>\nAnd so the next day we went to a theatre in downtown Toronto to see the movie. As we took the elevator from the parking lot up to the cinema, I noticed that it was full of middle-aged women and a couple of gay men. I turned to everybody, \u201cAre we all heading up to see\u00a0Shame<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\nThe assembled group all mumbled and nodded their assent. A woman in a bright blue jacket suddenly blurt out, \u201d I so wanted him in\u00a0Jane Eyre<\/em>. I mean, I really wanted him!\u201d<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pajiba.com\/assets_c\/2011\/12\/Michael-Fassbender-as-Mr-R-thumb-250x135-35281.jpg\" alt=\"Michael-Fassbender-as-Mr-R.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n\u201cEven when he was blind and had that hobo beard?\u201d I asked her.<\/p>\n\u201cOh, sweet Jesus, even more, even more,\u201d she said, closing her eyes and biting her lip.<\/p>\nThe movie, like the elevator, was full of women and gay men. It didn\u2019t take long for McQueen and Fassbender to make their point as the repetitive demystification of what Fassbender\u2019s schlong looked like began in earnest. It looked pretty long to me. Maybe a little unnaturally so. I turned to Rachelle and asked, \u201cDo you think he might have stimulated it a little bit before these scenes? I mean, it looks like it\u2019s in a bit of an in between zone to me.\u201d<\/p>\nRachelle said nothing, but the older man sitting to my right responded, \u201cIt\u2019s common practice,\u201d he whispered, \u201cthey hire people to do it. They\u2019re called Fluffers I tell you, I would be Michael Fassbender\u2019s Fluffer for free.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cWhat do they Fluff with?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\u201cA gloved hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cWell, why wouldn\u2019t Fassbender Fluff himself?\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cOh child,\u201d he said, \u201cyou\u2019re so naive, it\u2019s Hollywood!\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cQuiet!\u201d Somebody shouted.<\/p>\nI noticed at this point that Rachelle had moved two rows away. I waved over at her but she was unresponsive. And so, for the rest of the movie this man and I kept a whispered dialogue running as we watched the movie.<\/p>\nIt\u2019s possible that\u00a0Shame\u00a0<\/em>was the quietest movie I have ever seen in my life. Devoid of any emotional core it was little more than a carefully arranged series of set pieces, installations, really, animated by actors. As the sexual compulsions\u2014 ever-multiplying\u2014 paraded by, people started to walk out of the theatre.<\/p>\nI leaned over to the man sitting next to me.<\/p>\n\u201cSo, the idea is that McQueen, in depicting porn, is trying to make something as boring as porn, right?\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cYes, but much better looking.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cI see.\u201d<\/p>\nI was quiet for a bit. I waved over at Rachelle but noticed that she\u2019d actually nodded off and was asleep.<\/p>\nThe man leaned over to me, \u201cYour girlfriend has decided to sit somewhere else?\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cIt annoys her when I talk during movies. Just drives her crazy, so often she\u2019ll just find another spot to sit.\u201d<\/p>\nThe man nodded. About ten minutes passed and then he leaned over again, \u201cThe movie\u2019s very formally, artfully constructed, but it\u2019s lifeless, you know what I mean?\u201d<\/p>\nI nodded, \u201cI surely do!\u201d<\/p>\nHe continued, \u201d They\u2019re making a boring movie in order to show us that addiction is boring and that addicts are by definition boring people. We pay to see how unpleasant and dull they are on the inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cNo,\u201d I corrected, \u201d we pay to see how beautiful they are on the outside.\u201d<\/p>\nThe man laughed and shook his head in agreement, and then he looked over at me, thinking.<\/p>\n\u201cDo you ever feel dead inside?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\nThere was a pause during which he shifted his body toward me.
